The Dochula Chorten is a memorial in Bhutan consisting of 108 stupas built to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Bhutanese soldiers who died in a 2003 military operation

. The chortens are situated on the Dochula Pass, offering visitors panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain range on clear days.

Historical background
  • The 2003 military operation: In the early 2000s, Assamese insurgents from India had set up bases in Bhutanese territory. The fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, led a volunteer army to remove the militants. The military operation was successful, but cost the lives of several Bhutanese soldiers.
  • Commissioned by the Queen Mother: To commemorate the victory and honor the fallen soldiers, Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck commissioned the building of the 108 chortens.
  • Completion and consecration: Construction on the chortens was completed in mid-2004, and the structures were formally consecrated with religious rites in June of that year.
Design and significance
  • A spiritual monument: The chortens are known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens and are arranged in three concentric circles around the pass. They are a revered and deeply spiritual site for the Bhutanese.
  • The number 108: The number 108 is considered sacred in Buddhism, representing the number of defilements that Buddhists aim to overcome to reach enlightenment.
  • Symbol of peace: Each whitewashed chorten, with its golden spire, stands as a symbol of Buddhist spirituality, sacrifice, and peace for the country.
  • Site of a festival: The pass is also home to the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple) and hosts the annual Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival in December. The festival is unique in Bhutan, as its performances are conducted by members of the Royal Bhutan Army rather than monks.
