Background

Vision

To be a beacon of cultural preservation and sustainability in Bhutan, ensuring that the historical essence of our heritage is revitalized, celebrated, and passed on to future generations through innovative and sustainable practices.

Mission

To preserve and enhance Bhutan’s cultural heritage by revitalizing and repurposing historical timbers, transforming them into valuable and meaningful artifacts. Through innovative craftsmanship and sustainable practices, we aim to protect our cultural legacy, foster economic growth, and inspire a deeper appreciation for Bhutan’s rich history.

Background

The Re-Heritage project, initiated by the Heritage Sites and Archaeology Division under the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, Ministry of Home Affairs, represents a significant stride in Bhutan's efforts to preserve its rich cultural heritage. Since the 9th Five-Year Plan, the department has been actively engaged in conservation projects across the country. A common challenge observed in these initiatives was the wastage of old timber members. Unlike stone, which could be reused, these historically significant timbers were often discarded or auctioned as firewood, despite their intricate carvings and paintings and their well-seasoned nature. These timbers, which had borne witness to Bhutan's history, were being lost to time. Recognizing the immense heritage value of these old timbers, the Division launched the 'Re-Heritage' project as part of Department’s Returns on Investment.

Initiative

The primary goal of this project is to breathe new life into these historical timbers, transforming them into valuable and culturally significant pieces. The project focuses on revitalizing and reinventing the timbers, thereby enhancing their value and preserving their historical essence. The Re-Heritage project aims to recycle these timbers, ensuring they do not lose their function and historical significance. By doing so, the project not only preserves Bhutan's cultural heritage but also promotes sustainable practices. Additionally, the project seeks to increase the value of old timber members, thus broadening stakeholder involvement in the protection and appreciation of these historical timbers.

Impact

The Re-Heritage project not only preserves Bhutan's cultural heritage but also contributes to economic development. The project creates marketable products from discarded materials, and the money earned from these products goes back to preserving Bhutan's heritage. By purchasing these unique and culturally significant items, individuals can contribute to the preservation of Bhutan's rich history and cultural heritage. The Reeritage project sets a precedent for sustainable practices in conservation efforts, demonstrating how heritage preservation can go hand in hand with environmental sustainability. The Re-Heritage project exemplifies Bhutan's commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while embracing innovative and sustainable practices. By transforming historical timbers into treasured artifacts, the project ensures that the stories and significance of Bhutan's past are not lost but celebrated and passed on to future generations.
